ICLs are usually used for high errors in young patients where the laser may not be suitable due to problems with thin cornea or the treatment required is outside the range. These patients can then retain the ability to shift focus from distance to near (accommodation) while getting their error corrected without the use of multifocal lenses which younger people may not tolerate

They can also be used in older people to enhance the results of a previous lens surgery done (functions as an add on lens)
